Holy Granola was created at the New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur, California by a hungry monk looking for something different to eat for breakfast. Back in the early 1990’s, Father John went into the monastic kitchen after morning prayers for breakfast, but found it to be the “same old thing” – egg and potatoes. He decided to put together a granola that would be tasty, relatively healthy and versatile. After many taste-testings by his brother monks, a hit was found and Holy Granola was born.
The monks create and sell the granola as a way to financially support themselves and pay for the operating expenses of the Hermitage, where they offer retreats to guests looking to get away from the busy world. One of the more famous fans of the granola is Larry King, former celebrity interviewer extraordinaire.
